About the Artist

Graduated from Rhode Island College in 1993 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Concentrating in sculpture while minoring in philosophy, he developed vocabulary of imagery that drew from his exposure to metaphysical, and the symbolist art. He makes sculptures and mixed media artworks with a minimalist approach. His works reference recognizable forms. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. Gonçalves tries to create works that are static in their presence yet fluid in their form: shapes evocative of atmosphere and presence that are part of an ambiguous thread. His exhibitions include ArtProv Gallery, AS220 Project space, Bannister Gallery/Focus Gallery in Providence. His work has been reviewed by the Providence Phoenix and the Providence Journal. His work is included in the collection of Bannister Gallery, Rhode Island College.
Christian Gonçalves currently lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island.
